Make Your Old Car Feel New

Old Car Feel NewAre you a car owner who doesn’t feel good and excited looking at your car because it has become old? It can happen to the best of us, especially if you are just starting out in life. I remember the first car I bought was a used ’99 Chevy Cavalier. It was in fairly good condition, but being fresh out of college meant maintaining the car wasn’t one of my top priorities. Subsequently, my old car became an embarrassment whenever I took my girl out on a date. The easier option here would have been to get rid of the used car and opt for a new one. But that’s when a good friend of mine, who happens to be an auto mechanic, suggested some tips that would make my old babe look just like new. So, here I will be sharing those tips, that will surely help all of you who want to be proud of their car, and are looking for ways to spruce up an older car.

Okay, I do agree that in order to turn back the clock the direct option is to replace all the broken/faulty parts. Now, this option can set you back anywhere between a couple of hundred to a couple of thousand bucks. For those who can’t afford that much, don’t worry. Even if your budget is low, you can make your old car look new by following the money saving options mentioned here.

First and foremost, no matter how old, banged up, or rusty, a really clean car is always going to look better than a car that is covered in dust and dirt. So, a thorough wash is a nice way to get started. A point to remember here, much like us humans, the condition of a car is always judged by looking at its exterior. In any case, that is the first thing visible while looking at a car. Hence, when going for a car makeover we shall work on the outside first and then on the inside.

External Makeover

Remove Dents and Repaint
The car’s paint is its protective shield against the elements, but as time ticks by all sorts of nicks and scratches appear. Being the first recognizable and visible part of the vehicle, our first objective is to make the exterior look as new as possible. This can be done by spray painting a fresh coat (starts from $1500). No matter how tempted you are to paint your car, you shouldn’t try it unless you have some professional painting experience. Else your car will probably end up looking worse than it is. Also, a banged up car with dents is an eyesore. A professional dent removal job can restore the original curves on your car. Now, a 1-inch dent can cost you anywhere between $50 to $100.

Money Saving Option
If your car has minor scratches, you can touch them up with paint pens ($4 to $20) that you can find for sale at most automotive supply stores. But be sure to get exactly the right color. Although paint pens can do a good job covering up small scratches, they are not meant to cover large areas. Likewise, for small dents, try a DIY dent-removal kit that is available on the market. But remember such kits are effective only for small dents, and might require some skill. The kits can cost anywhere between $20 to $150.

New Headlights
Unlike glass headlight covers used in older cars, plastic headlight lenses turn yellow and become foggy and look worn out after as little as three or four years. UV radiation from sunlight turns them yellow or cloudy, which can also become a potential safety hazard. The end result is that this makes your car look old. Getting a new pair of eyes will surely lighten up the look of your car, not to mention the better illumination at night and in foggy conditions.

Money Saving Option
Use cleaning kits (around $20-25) specifically designed to clean plastic headlight assemblies. The best ones will contain a cleaner as well as an UV protector. It is not necessary to remove the headlights from the vehicle to clean them. You don’t need special tools or skills, either. The entire cleaning routine may take around 30-45 minutes, but the result is better looking and brighter headlights.

New Set of Wheels
One of the most neglected part of a used car is its wheels. Since it is an old car, tires are bound to wear, and rims tend to rust and accumulate dust and dirt. Opting for a fresh set of wheels will surely lend a new look, not to mention the other benefits of using fresh tires. Upsizing or choosing larger wheels can go a long way in changing the look of the car. Larger wheels are instantly noticeable and also provide certain benefits like a better grip and a smoother ride. You can also opt for alloy rims to complement the look of your car.

Money Saving Option
Use a tire cleaning and dressing kit ($20-80) to give your tires and rubber trim an exceptionally brand new look. Why opt for expensive alloys when plastic hubcaps look just the same. Sleek looking plastic hubcaps (around $30-100) can give your car a sportier look and even become your personal style statement.

Internal Makeover

Change Floor Mats and Carpet
Carpets get loaded with ingrained mud, sand, and debris that cling to our footwear. Coffee or soda spills can also stain the carpet and ruin the nap on it. Floor mats and carpets really take a beating and can become worn out after a reasonable amount of time. Luckily, most auto stores sell floor mats and carpets ($30 to $100 for 4-piece set) in a variety of colors and styles to fit your fancy.

Money Saving Option
Excavate all the trash splayed all around and vacuum the entire floor. Use a carpet cleaner spray ($5 to $20) to remove tough stains. Soak the mats and carpet (if wash-proof) in warm water for half an hour and then shampoo them thoroughly.

Change Seats and Upholstery
Foam could lose its form over the years and this might end up being uncomfortable. Have it replaced and invest in a good back rest and neck-pillow. Seat covers are relatively inexpensive, easy to install and are one of the most dramatic ways to impact the interior. Perhaps best of all, they come in thousands of colors and fabric combinations. Seat covers can be ordered with emblems or logos on them, so you can even show off your team spirit or school pride.

Money Saving Option
Opting for car seat covers in the preferred choice of material and color can add a dash of color and style to otherwise drab interiors. If your upholstery is in relatively good shape, then opt to wax and buff the seats using a good wax polish ($5 to $20) and a portable buffer attachment. A little bit of elbow grease is sure to bring about a marked difference to the look of your car interior.

Polish Dashboard and Fix Console
As time goes by, the plastic on the dashboard and steering wheel becomes dull and may need replacement. The glass on the speedometer might have scratches. Knobs, switches and indicating lights on the console also cease to function properly over time, and may require replacement or repair. If worn out, you may even choose to get a new customized steering wheel, or replace certain sections of the dashboard if they are cracked or damaged beyond repair.

Money Saving Option
Use a dashboard cleaner fluid ($10-40) and a microfiber cloth to wipe the surfaces clean. Do not directly spray the fluid on to the surfaces as they tend to leave a stain. Use small brushes and cotton swabs to clean hard to reach spots. Coating these surfaces with UV protector is a good way of ensuring that the dashboard and console are protected from cracking up or getting discolored due to prolonged exposure to sunlight.

Some More Tips

✔ Use deodorizers that eliminate odors from mold, smoke, and other causes, rather than merely masking them. You can also try eliminating odors from the air blowing ducts by spraying odor eliminator into the system’s air intake.

✔ Bluetooth integration, navigation systems, video monitors, DVD players, and a host of other gadgets lend a snazzy look and feel to the car. Moreover, all this stuff can be installed in just about any car or truck, regardless of its age and condition.

✔ Clean and polish your car’s windshield (and other exterior glass) with plain water and old newspaper. Unlike soft cloth or paper towels, newspaper doesn’t leave lint.

✔ To help restore a license plate that is beginning to rust, spray it with a good anti-rust (like WD-40) and wipe with a clean rag. Not only will this eliminate light surface rust, but will also prevent the plate from rusting further.

✔ While using water and soap to clean under the hood, be particularly careful to keep water away from electrical connections like the fuse box, cable junctions, and the large electrical connectors near the battery.

With just a few supplies and a little bit of elbow grease, shaving five years off the look of your car isn’t that difficult. It is still much better than coughing up a few thousand bucks for a brand new car. What’s more, making an older car look like new can pay dividends, worth up to 50 percent more than a car which is just fairly maintained.

The Different Types of Mag Wheels Available for Your Car

Mag wheels are lightweight rims for tyres that are to be placed on cars. Mags are made of magnesium, that’s where the word mag comes from. They are originally made for racing because they were lightweight enough for fast driving. However, mag wheels have found a place on the consumer market as a way for car enthusiasts to enhance the appearance of their favourite show car.

The term “mag wheel” has now been expanded by car enthusiasts to only use wheels that are made of aluminum. There are different types of rims available for all cars, bakkies, SUV’s and even 4×4 vehicles. You can choose a mag in different sizes. The mags normally goes onto the tyre and onto your car. The wheel retailers will help you do this. You can choose your mags from chrome, to a painted or polished finish.

There are a variety of mags available from drop rims to spoke wheels. These are mags that young men normally put onto their cars for drag racing or just to impress their friends. A drop rim is a style of mag that has the center of the wheel dropped towards the axle of the car. This type of mag will come with a five or six lug nut attachment to the car. Keep in mind that drop rims are very hard to clean as the indented design of the wall of the rim can cause the mag to collect all kinds of dirt.

Then there is the back angle wheel mag which comes in a variety of shapes. One with just a few spokes like three or four and then another with so much, like ten or twenty. These would require so much attention when cleaning. These mags are also available in black and silver. If you need a more colourful mag wheel then you should think about the BSX Mirror Lip and the VN range. This mag comes in orange, gold, silver polish, silver and black. Most young people use these on their cars.

The Main Car Audio Installation Options

There was once a time when automobiles did not come with their own pre-installed audio machines. However, auto manufacturers have since included the latest in stereo technology in their new models. Nevertheless, some auto companies cut costs by installing low-quality stereos in their latest models. People who like listening to quality music while driving their automobiles find quality stereos to be a worthwhile investment. Many radios come with installation manuals making them relatively easy to install.

Types

Car audio installation varies depending on the type of radio that you want to install and the vehicle model. Once you have determined the type of stereo you want, find out if it can be installed in your automobile.

Materials Needed

Some of the materials you need to install a stereo include a socket wrench, a screwdriver, voltage meter, a solder or crimper, and a small battery. You may need some wire ties and electrical tape to keep the wires of the system tied in one place.

Removing the Original Radio or Stereo

You need to remove your old radio before you can install the new one. This is where the screwdriver comes in handy. Start by removing the screws that hold the front panel of the system. Be sure to keep the screws in one easy-to-reach place where you cannot lose them. Take the front panel of the system out. Inside the CD player housing, you will find another panel that you need to gently pull out until it unsnaps. Unscrew all the screws and bolts holding in the system. Pull out the CD player and unplug the cable that connects it to the automobile.

Wiring the New Radio

Take the cable of the new stereo and plug it into the car. Put the stereo where it needs to be and screw it into place. Make sure the screws are screwed in tight. Do the same for the front panel.

Hiring Someone Else

Many automotive companies provide radio installation services. In addition, electronic stores can install entertainment systems purchased from their stores. A car entertainment system installation is quite simple and there are slim chances that you will encounter any problems when you hire a professional to do the installation.

Car Audio Tips

Many modern vehicle CD players come with a wide range of features and are relatively sensitive pieces of equipment. It is important to take caution when operating your car CD player in different temperatures. If the motorcar has been exposed to the sun for a prolonged period and its interior temperature has increased, consider waiting until the automobile has cooled down before turning on the vehicle entertainment system. The same rule applies during winter; let the vehicle warm up a bit before turning on its entertainment player to reduce the risk of a malfunction.

Like any other vehicle part, a car audio system requires care and maintenance. Keep your vehicle mp3 player clean so that it can effectively operate for a long time. Avoid putting dirty CDs and DVDs into your vehicle music player to prevent malfunctions. Finally, clean your car music player regularly to rid it of dirt and dust.

Best Tips to Select the Excellent Performance Exhaust for the Car

Driving around in the factory assembled vehicle and a customized vehicle are two different things as well as the overall experience is also different. Performance exhausts make a lot of difference in terms of power, speed, looks and sound.

So you wish to enhance the current performance that your car is giving by adding something more powerful, something that will quench your thirst for strength and speed. At the same time you don’t wish to do any modifications with the engine specifications. So the only thing that is left at your disposal is to upgrade the current exhaust system, to something more proficient and strong. Fitting of new exhaust will make the car look sleek and give it an optimum performance with a good throaty sound. The exhaust not only improvises the overall performance of the car, it also creates a fine and attractive persona around it to admire. There are many varieties of exhausts such as Akrapovic exhaust available in the market right now, which gives what it says. However, if you search it over the web, finding one that will suit your requirements isn’t a very daunting task. Though it does take a bit of work to select an exhaust system, which is powerful yet affordable is something that may be a bit hard, but not impossible.

Some best tips to follow while looking for performance exhaust

You must consider a few things prior to picking the correct exhaust for the vehicle, especially if it’s the first time you are making a purchase. Here are few things that you may look into while purchasing something similar or contrast to Milltek Exhaust, which is considered one of the most excellent performance exhausts across the globe.

Always choose a piece that has considerably large-sized exhaust pipe to it. This is for a simple reason that pipes with large diameters assist in releasing the various toxic fumes conveniently and very effectively. Consequently, this puts less pressure on the vehicle’s engine, which then results in a higher horsepower.
The exhaust tube must be checked while purchasing for it must not be in a state of crush bent. This means that the diameter of the tube should be same all across the system, which allows the gas to pass easily without any hurdles.
The bore tubing size must fit properly on the engine’s exhaust hole. If it doesn’t fit well, it will result in low performance of the vehicle. That would certainly be a waste of money, effort and time; with frustration of failure to top everything off.
The metal of the exhaust system also plays a major role in its effectiveness. Hence, one must prefer buying a system that is completely built of absolute stainless steel, which lasts longer than any other metal.

Few other things to keep in mind

There will be a lot of other replicas of performance exhausts in the market; some have even replicated the Jaguar Exhaust systems as well. However, buying from an authentic dealer will always ensure the quality of the product. On the other hand, it would be better to discuss the entire thing with a professional who has all the knowledge as well as a good experience of procuring and installing the performance exhausts. One must also understand that with these performance apparatus, the mileage of the vehicle may drop down from a little to a lot. This shouldn’t worry the owner because everything can’t be sought by giving up nothing.

Proper Machine Buffing With Compound

It is recommended that you use a variable rotary buffer/polisher. Four ply buffing pads from Buff and Shine or 3M Company are the easiest to use in corner and angled surfaces. You may also use foam pads if you find those preferable and easier to use for yourself. After the boat has been thoroughly washed, properly tape off with a very high quality masking tape, the striping, the rub strip that runs along the hull of the boat, and any areas you feel may get hit by the polisher and make a blemish or mark. It actually saves time and you’ll be happy that you did it. It takes a few extra minutes but it is the proper way to buff a boat.

To begin the buffing on a cool clean surface, lay down a strip of compound and run buffer at a fairly high rate of speed between (1800 to 2500 rpm) to break the abrasives down and get a brilliant shine. As you finish the section that you are buffing, back off on the pressure as you start to see the compound disappear. You’ll get a higher gloss when you perform this properly. Imagine a grid pattern as you buff the hull, side to side, then top to bottom. This helps to ensure you don’t miss a spot. To get the product to work a little longer you can mist, distilled water only, on the product itself as you’re buffing. It will work a little bit longer and you can actually a little more gloss out of it. It will make the abrasives in it work just a touch longer. You can get some really nice results by doing this.

Be very careful when working near exposed antennas, lines, horns, and as mentioned before, especially striping. Slow the speed down when buffing on stripes and use less pressure on the buffer. Remove as much of the product as possible, then wipe residual by hand. It is also recommended that you tape off areas, tops, exposed seats, etc. that may be in the path of flying compound. You can do this using towels, old sheets. There are also different areas you may want to cover up like the dash if it’s an exposed top boat. It just saves time on cleanup later.

Optional Second Step

If you follow the buffing step with Blue Magnum Carnuba from Monsters, you will achieve a brilliant reflective shine and long lasting protection. In the buffing process an optional second step is to add Meguiar’s #45 polish by hand or orbital polisher to the area just buffed. This will help feed the pores of the gel coat and add an additional amount of gloss to the surface. With this you have to use the product as directed and do one section at a time. It does not work well as a wax to just let it sit on there, haze, and then try to remove it. It’s something that you put on and remove almost immediately. As mentioned, it is an optional step to use in this process. This also is a product that you’ll want to keep away from the anti-skid portions of the boat, usually the side railings or the top deck where the anti-skid is mostly found. It just does not work well with anti-skid
